The January 2023 unemployment rate for Connecticut was calculated by the BLS Local Area Unemployment Statistics program (LAUS) to be 3.9% (seasonally adjusted). This is down from the revised December 2022 level of 4.0%. The Connecticut unemployment rate was 4.8% in January 2022. The statewide jobless rate was 3.9% in February 2020, just before the COVID lockdown, and got this low in August 2022 (3.9%, after annual re-processing). The U.S. unemployment rate for January 2023 was calculated at 3.4%, down from the revised December 2022 rate (3.5%) and lower than the January 2022 jobless rate of 4.0% (seasonally adjusted).

Data users must be cautious about trying to compare or reconcile UI claims data with the official unemployment figures derived from the household survey.

NOTE:  The unemployment rate represents the number unemployed as a percent of the civilian labor force. The unemployed are all persons who did not work, but were available for work during the survey week (except for temporary illness) and made specific efforts to find a job in the prior week. Persons waiting to be recalled to a job from which they had been laid off need not be looking for work to be classified.
