RAILROAD BRAKE, SIGNAL, AND SWITCH OPERATORS
 
Occupation Description:
 
  Operate railroad track switches. Couple or uncouple rolling stock to make up or break up trains. Signal engineers by hand or flagging. May inspect couplings, air hoses, journal boxes, and hand brakes.

Typical Tasks:
 
 
  • Climb ladders to tops of cars to set brakes.
  • Connect air hoses to cars, using wrenches.
  • Signals locomotive engineer to start or stop train when coupling or uncoupling cars.
  • Makes minor repairs to couplings, airhoses, and journal boxes using hand tools.
  • Places passengers' baggage in rack above seats on train.
  • Reports to conductor any equipment requiring major repair.
  • Climbs ladder to top of car to set brakes or to ride atop to control its speed when shunted.
