LOGISTICIANS

Occupation Description:

Analyze and coordinate the ongoing logistical functions of a firm or organization. Responsible for the entire life cycle of a product, including acquisition, distribution, internal allocation, delivery, and final disposal of resources. Excludes �Transportation, Storage, and Distribution Managers� (11-3071) and �Project Management Specialists� (13-1082).

Specialized Occupations:

Logistics Engineers (ONET code: 13-1081.01)


	Occupation Description:

	Design or analyze operational solutions for projects such as transportation optimization, network modeling, process and methods analysis, cost containment, capacity enhancement, routing and shipment optimization, or information management.


	Typical Tasks:

	Provide logistical facility or capacity planning analyses for distribution or transportation functions. Propose logistics solutions for customers. Develop logistic metrics, internal analysis tools, or key performance indicators for business units. Conduct logistics studies or analyses, such as time studies, zero-base analyses, rate analyses, network analyses, flow-path analyses, or supply chain analyses. Identify cost-reduction or process-improvement logistic opportunities. Review contractual commitments, customer specifications, or related information to determine logistics or support requirements. Evaluate effectiveness of current or future logistical processes.


	Knowledge:

	Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.. English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.. Mathematics - Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.. Transportation - Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including the relative costs and benefits.. Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.. Computers and Electronics - Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.. Administration and Management - Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources..

Logistics Analysts (ONET code: 13-1081.02)

Typical Tasks:

Maintain and develop positive business relationships with a customer's key personnel involved in, or directly relevant to, a logistics activity.
Develop an understanding of customers' needs and take actions to ensure that such needs are met.
Manage subcontractor activities, reviewing proposals, developing performance specifications, and serving as liaisons between subcontractors and organizations.
Develop proposals that include documentation for estimates.
Review logistics performance with customers against targets, benchmarks, and service agreements.
Direct availability and allocation of materials, supplies, and finished products.
Redesign the movement of goods to maximize value and minimize costs.
