The United States Office of Management and Budget (OMB) determines NECTAs for New England states similarly to the way they define metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas for the rest of the country. They apply published standards to decennial Census data to designate a core area containing a substantial population nucleus, together with adjacent communities having a high degree of economic and social integration with that core.
