PAINTING, COATING, AND DECORATING WORKERS
 
Occupation Description:
 
  Paint, coat, or decorate articles, such as furniture, glass, plateware, pottery, jewelry, cakes, toys, books, or leather. Exclude "Artists and Related Workers" (27-1011 through 27-1019), "Designers" (27-1021 through 27-1029), "Photographic Process Workers" (51-9131), and "Etchers and Engravers" (51-9194).
 
Typical Tasks:
 
 
  • Cleans surface of workpiece in preparation for coating, using cleaning fluid, solvent, brushes, scraper, steam, sandpaper, or cloth.
  • Cuts out sections in surface of material to be inlaid with decorative pieces, using pattern and knife or scissors.
  • Places coated workpiece in oven or dryer for specified time to dry or harden finish.
  • Melts or heats coating material to specified temperature.
  • Selects and mixes ingredients to prepare coating substance according to specifications, using paddle or mechanical mixer.
  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment, using solvent, brushes, and rags.
  • Applies coating, such as paint, ink, or lacquer, to protect or decorate workpiece surface, using spray gum, pen, or brush.

  • Fine Arts - Knowledge of the theory and techniques required to compose, produce, and perform works of music, dance, visual arts, drama, and sculpture..
  • Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services..
  • Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models..
  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance..
